Hello Visitor,
As part of the Year 1 reading assessment requirements set by the Government, your child is expected to take a Phonics screen check in June 2024 alongside their peers across the UK. This test assesses pupils’ ability to segment and blend phonemes to decode words. The check will take place the week beginning, Monday 10th June and will be administered in school by a member of staff that your child knows well.
Parents will be informed of the outcome of the tests, once the results have been verified by the Government and the Local Authority. If your child does not meet the expected standard, they will have the opportunity to retake the Screen Check when they are in Year 2.
In order to help prepare your child for the phonics screening test we ask that you continue to listen to your child read on a daily basis, and consider using some of the online resources available. We will also be sending home Phonics Homework so the children can practise segmenting and blending real and pseudo words – please encourage your child to dot and dash the sounds in order to support their decoding attempts.
Useful websites include:
www.twinkl.co.uk Here you can search for the phase 3, 4 and 5 sounds that will feature in the test. You will find flashcards, games and other activities.
www.phonicsplay.co.uk This website has lots of super interactive games and activities to play on the computer.
www.oxfordowl.co.uk This website has a wealth of information about phonics and also lots of ebooks to read together.
We are thrilled with how hard the children continue to work on their Phonics and very much appreciate your support at home.
Yours sincerely
Mrs Brown Reading and Phonics Lead
